Disclaimer: I do not know Austin, and this schedule does not take into account the distance between locations. This is a fantasy, after all! If you are going to be there in person, obviously, you’re going to have to make some painful choices and accept that you can’t see everyone because there are unavoidable conflicts. I think it’s a good idea to know what your alternatives are at any given time so you can be flexible. Watch the beginning and ending times on the schedule because some stage times are short. Many bands are scheduled several times during the festival, at official and unofficial shows. In general, I’d rather see an hour performance than 30 or 40 minutes.
In my Fantasy schedule for March 18, I am starting with Wednesday afternoon and going into the wee hours of Thursday morning. Most shows before 9 PM are unofficial. My schedule is a mixture of bands I have seen and can recommend or would like to see if I were going to Austin for SXSW 2009. I used this very nice scheduling site to help make my lists.
12:30 - 1:15 PM: Here We Go Magic at Mohawk
HWGM is playing several times, and all the sets seem to be the same length. I recommend catching this daytime show.

1:30 - 2:30 PM : These United States at Peckerheads

So far, this all seems doable. However, from this point on, conflicts occur and tough choices will have to be made.
3:30 - 4:40 PM: Vetiver at Mohawk
Vetiver are playing several shows, but most are at times when more conflicts occur. If your heart is set on seeing them, I’d choose this time.
Get “Hurry On Sundown” mp3 at my SXSW 2009 Sampler #2 and “Everyday” mp3 at RCRDLBL

Followed by

4:40 - 5:10 PM: The Mae Shi at Mohawk
Seeing this act following mellow Vetiver will give you the mental equivalent of a whiplash, but you should definitely see one of their wild and unpredictable performances sometime during SXSW.

3:30 - 4:00 PM: We Were Promised Jetpacks at Emo’s Annex
SXSW is the first U.S. performance of this promising Scottish band.

AND
5:05 - 5:35 PM: Beach House at Red
I’d go for this early, short set by Beach House because their other shows conflict with so many others at later times.
