N. O. Jazz Fest, Part 2: Funky New Orleans

Joe Krown with Walter “Wolfman” Washington and Russell Batiste, Jr. – Gentilly Stage [11:20am]:

Joe Krown

Set review:
I caught most of this wonderful set by this trio of New Orleans greats. Guitarist Walter “Wolfman” Washington did the lead vocals, while Joe Krown played some nice keyboards on the Hammond B-3 and drummer Russell Batiste Jr. kept the beat. They generally played New Orleans rhythm-and-blues music.

Big Sam’s Funky Nation – Gentilly Stage [12:35pm]:

Set review:
Prior to seeing them, everyone I spoke to had good things to say about this band. And they were right. Big Sam Williams (on vocals and trombone) led this New Orleans jazz and funk band that consisted of trumpet, bass, guitar, drums, and keyboard players. Their bass player was especially good at laying down a funky foundation from which Big Sam and the others would solo over. They put on a really good set.

Ivan Neville & Dumpstaphunk – Gentilly Stage [2:05 pm]:

Set review:
This was my favorite New Orleans band set of the day. Ivan (son of Aaron of the Neville Brothers) and his band cranked out mean and irresistible funk from start to finish, daring anyone not to move to their rhythms. And as hot as it was, this was the perfect band to keep the crowd awake, moving, and grooving. Along with Ivan’s great keyboard playing were lead guitarist Ian Neville, two bassists (Nick Daniels and Tony Hall), and drummer Raymond Webber. This band was pure rock and funk oriented, producing intricate danceable grooves. It’s no wonder they’re considered New Orleans’ best funk band. Their set went over the schedule a bit, and I had to leave it to take a break from the heat and replenish my water supply and prepare for the final sets of the day.
