For the first time in years, Indie Mom and I have missed a Radiohead performance in the L.A. area. Well, Thom Yorke (playing with Nigel Godrich, Flea, Joey Waronker, and Mauro Refosco) is enough of Radiohead to count. And because Radiohead is our favorite band, I should at least acknowledge his appearance in our area.
Find a compilation of nonprofessional videos from the warm-up show at Hollywood’s Echoplex at At Ease. I can’t believe how many people are talking during the show. WTF did they go for? Kevin Bronson reports (link below) that Yorke even quipped at one point, “If you’re going to have a chat, go the fuck outside, will you?”
Read reviews at Pop and Hiss, the LA Times music blog and at LA Buzz Bands by Kevin Bronson, who took the photo above. I am looking forward to more reviews, photos, and videos of the shows at the Orpheum Theatre last night and tonight and maybe some more boots. I am very grateful to the people who took the trouble to record anything because I know how much trouble it is.
Yorke and company performed The Eraser in its entirety before showcasing new and unreleased material. From At Ease: “‘Skirting On The Surface’ is a song included on the ‘In Rainbows’ recording sessions, but was never played (or released) before. ‘Open The Floodgates’ has been floating around since Radiohead’s 2006 tour. The song was soundchecked (with drums) at Bayside in San Diego on June 27th, 2006, and never heard from again.” Until this show, which concluded with the two songs from Yorke’s newly-released 12″ single, Feeling Pulled Apart by Horses.
I need to spend some more time absorbing the 12″ numbers, and of the others, I can’t decide if “Judge, Jury, and Executioner” or “Skirting on the Surface,” is my favorite. Who knows how different they’ll sound by the time they appear on an album?

I may have missed Thom Yorke, but the bright spot in my week is that I am taking my grandson, He Might Be Giant to his first concert! When he stayed with me at Spring Break, I played Fever Ray’s album for him, and he loved it. So when tickets went on sale for her show at the Henry Fonda Musicbox, I bought them right away. Since then, she has added a date at the Glass House in Pomona, which would have been more convenient, but the Musicbox is a classy place to go for your first rock concert. I am looking forward to it!
