Recently Tim at Contrast Podcast called for our favorite 50 songs of the year in preparation for the annual Festive 50, which will be one great list compiled from the current year favorites of CP’s contributors, including yours truly. You have 50 favorite songs of 2009, don’t you? And no doubt, you can come up with that list on short notice, right?
I had to include on my list a song that I have waited literally years to see released: “Clean Coloured Wire” by Engineers, which appears on Three Fact Fader, released in July, the band’s first release since 2005’s self-titled album. “Clean Colored Wire” has been posted on their MySpace page since about 2007 but has not been otherwise available. My love for this song has definitely withstood the test of time!
Engineers’ sound occupies a delicious niche squarely between and covering electronica and shoegaze. On “Clean Coloured Wire” the quirky beep-boop-beep keyboard riff energizes while the subdued vocals soothe–an irresistible combination. Other must-have tracks for shoegaze lovers are the title song and “Sometimes I Realize.”

That’s my favorite song from that album. Have you heard the Harmonia song “Watussi”? Your favorite part of the Engineers songs is a sample. I included the Harmonia track on a recent mix here:
